Mo’Nique Says She Lost ‘Tens of Millions’ of Dollars Because of Tyler Perry

Shannon Sharpe seems to have the ability to get people to spill the tea on his podcast “Club Shay Shay.” Comedian Katt Williams spent hours giving inside dirt on people in the Black comedy circle last month. Now the latest celebrity dishing is Mo’Nique.

In a recent interview, Academy Award-winning actress Mo’Nique has once again spoken out against Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, alleging that they played a role in blackballing her in Hollywood. Mo’Nique, 56, also claimed Kevin Hart did a 180, going from offering his support to backing away from her.

Mo-Nique’s Feud Upon Feud

The feud between Mo’Nique and Winfrey and Perry dates back to 2009, stemming from Mo’Nique’s refusal to promote the film “Precious” for “free” and her omission of Perry, Winfrey, and director Lee Daniels from her 2010 Oscars speech. Mo’Nique claims that this resulted in her being “blacklisted” from the industry. She claims it cost her family tens of millions of dollars. Actors tend to be compensated in their contracts to promote films. “Precious” was the first theatrical film to be affiliated with Perry’s production company, Very Perry Productions, doing business as Tyler Perry Studios.

Mo’Nique asserts that she possesses audio recordings of Tyler Perry admitting to spreading rumors about her being “difficult to work with.” She alleges that Perry confessed to her over the phone that he started the rumor but planned to vindicate her publicly after his 2016 film “Boo” hit theaters. Although the alleged audio was not played during the podcast, Sharpe confirmed that he heard it himself.

Mo’Nique on Money Lost

She says this alleged “lie” cost her millions. “That’s cost my family tens of millions of dollars, yeah, over a lie and a rumor,” she says on the interview that posted Feb. 7 on YouTube.

She says this reputation kept her from creating wealth for the generation after her.

“We want to ensure that when we leave here, our babies are in good hands. Their well-being is paramount. If Tyler Per hadn’t spread that falsehood, we’d be on our way already,” she stressed.

Mo’Nique also claims that Perry demanded she apologize publicly to him and Oprah, stating that they “had nothing to do with messing up [her] career.”‘ Mo’Nique refused the request and suggested that Perry is intimidated by her husband and manager, Sidney Hicks.

Mo’Nique’s Problem With Oprah

Regarding Winfrey, Mo’Nique believes that Winfrey frequently overstepped boundaries, particularly when she invited Mo’Nique’s brother she says had previously molested her onto her daytime talk show. Mo’Nique alleges that Oprah invited her on the show without informing her that her family members, including her mother, father, and other brother, would also be present.

Mo’Nique further accuses Oprah of taking film roles from her after the fallout from “Precious,” including roles in Lee Daniels’ “The Butler” and a biopic about Richard Pryor.

Perry has repeatedly denied accusations of blackballing Mo’Nique.

She did credit Hart with helping her out financially when she was in need by “writing a check.” She said she paid back the loan with interest but when it came time for him to follow through a promise to work with her he backed out.

Mo’Nique, whose net worth is estimated to be $9 million, has long complained about her compensation in Hollywood. According to her, she did 110 episodes of hit series “The Parkers,” and the show made $800 million between 2004 and 2009. She claims she never saw any money. “We get a call, ‘We got to do an audit and everything.’ That was in 2009 when it made $800 million. Now we’re in 2024, and they’re trying to convince Countess Vaughn that that show made no money.”
