What has to have been the most-watched podcast interview of 2024 so far — Shannon Sharpe chatting it up with Katt Williams earlier this year — significantly boosted Sharpe’s popularity and purportedly brought in a substantial amount of money for the “Club Shay Shay” host.
Katt Williams Interview Paid Off For Sharpe
With the earnings from this interview, Sharpe said he splurged on a luxurious gold watch.
On March 7, during an episode of the “Night Cap” podcast that was clipped, hosts Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and Sharpe discussed the latter’s other podcast, “Club Shay Shay,” focusing particularly on its earnings from its most watched interview.
The watch flex served as a demonstration for the haters who presumably were the ones mocking Sharpe following his newfound success in podcasting.
Now, Sharpe is flashing an extravagant 18-carat yellow gold and olive green watch with a bold aesthetic on his wrist. The timepiece is dubbed the “John Mayer” Daytona 116508.
Colloquially named after the famous musician by enthusiasts and embraced by the New England singer despite Rolex not officially labeling it as such, the Rolex Daytona model is a highly sought-after luxury wristwatch known for its precision, durability, and classic design.
On the secondary market, prices for the 116508 “John Mayer” Daytona with the green dial have been in the range of $74,200 to $90,995 for unworn watches from 2020-2023, according to Wrist Check.
Compared to its initial introduction at $34,650 in 2016, the watch experienced a massive surge in its appeal in the early 2020s, with subsequent prices peaking in March 2022 and reaching a staggering $126,000.
According to Watch Guy, the watch, a 40mm timepiece with a fixed bezel featuring an engraved tachymetric scale and Oyster bracelet, is powered by the Caliber 4130 movement. It offers precision and reliability, making its discontinuation in 2023 all the more notable for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Of those seen wearing the “John Mayer” are Drake and Conor McGregor.
In Sharpe’s collection, the “John Mayer” is not the only status symbol. On Jan. 5, he recounted to recurring co-host and former Washington Wizard Gilbert Arenas an incident where a woman he was seeing expressed a desire to be gifted an Audemars Piguet similar to his own. Sharpe took offense, feeling that his accomplishments in football and TV broadcasting had earned him the privilege to wear such a watch.
