Kel Mitchell’s relationships with his ex-wife, Kenan Thompson, Nick Cannon, and Dan Schneider have been getting much scrutiny as of late, but a fair observation to speculate on is why his net worth is estimated to be between $500,000 and as high as $5 million, according to several broad celebrity financial outlets.
Spilling Tea To Shannon Sharpe
In a recent appearance on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast, Mitchell claimed to host Shannon Sharpe that Hampton had allegedly been unfaithful during their marriage, with Mitchell stating she became pregnant by multiple men while they were still married, leading to an abortion of the first and second pregnancies.
Mitchell claims he forgave her infidelity and attempted to salvage their marriage for their children’s sake, but he ultimately gave up in 2005 after another pregnancy and a miscarriage.
Hampton has disputed those claims, taking to social media to air her own grievances. She claimed that Mitchell’s abusive behavior, as well as his broke and dependent on her led to their marriage failing. Hampton’s claim that Mitchell was destitute when their marriage failed seems to be at odds with her claims that he owes her $1.2 million in back child support, as his payments would have been pegged to his income at the time of his divorce.
Mitchell and His Money
His most profitable and well-known project was starring in the Nickelodeon sketch comedy series “All That” from 1994 to 1999, which led to the spin-off sitcom “Kenan & Kel” from 1996 to 2000 and the 1997 film “Good Burger.” These early Nickelodeon projects brought him widespread fame and recognition. While his best years as a child star in children’s sitcoms are behind him, Mitchell had the opportunity to star in Paramount+’s “Good Burger 2” in 2023, according to IMDb.
Mitchell’s earnings or contracts from his work on the Nickelodeon shows are not publicly known. Given that child stars only receive a portion of their earnings under the Coogan Act – a blocked trust account that child actors cannot access until becoming legal adults – it is rather unusual for a parent or court-appointed guardian ad litem or trustee to confirm how much Nickelodeon paid their child.
How much he was paid for “Good Burger” or its long-awaited streaming sequel was also not discussed.
Many key details about Mitchell’s assets and liabilities, from the most expensive items to what he owes, are not known.
Mitchell is currently a licensed youth pastor at Spirit Food Christian Center since 2019 in Los Angeles. He has been involved with the Helps Ministry for more than 10 years, engaging in philanthropy work. It is also unclear how much he makes in those roles.
Mitchell has been fortunate to star in other roles outside of the Nickelodeon bubble, having played recurring characters in adult sitcoms such as “The Parkers,” “The Steve Harvey Show,” and “One on One.” He has also had the opportunity to voice act in several children’s cartoons.
Among his successes, Mitchell has also faced negative press, such as issues surrounding his relationship with Hampton, who guest-starred alongside him in three shows he was prominent in: “Cousin Skeeter,” “Kenan & Kel,” and “Clifford the Big Red Dog.”
Mitchell has also had a longstanding falling out with his co-star and on-and-off friend Kenan Thompson, who was his “Kenan & Kel” co-star. Hampton has alluded that Mitchell has had secret relationships with men, including Nick Cannon. Her claims are unsubstantiated, though she boldly states that she saw Cannon wearing her cheerleading outfit for Mitchell.
