The Way to the Top

King’s journey to the top of the media world is a story of persistence and passion. After graduating from the University of Maryland with a degree in psychology, King’s interests soon guided her into journalism. She began her career at WJZ-TV in Baltimore as a production assistant, where she met Oprah Winfrey, who was then working as an anchor. The two quickly formed a lifelong friendship, with Winfrey once telling Barbara Walters:

“She is the mother I never had; she is the sister everybody would want; she is the friend everybody deserves; I don’t know a better person.”

King’s career trajectory saw her move from local news to national prominence. Her ability to connect with audiences and report with authenticity paved the way for her transition to co-anchor “CBS This Morning” and a special correspondent for “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

However, King’s journey was not without challenges. Her talk show, “The Gayle King Show,” was canceled in 2011 after just one season due to low ratings. More recently, her show with Charles Barkley,”King Charles,” for which she reportedly signed a $12 million contract, also ended after a 6-month run, failing to capture the audience it aimed for. Nevertheless, King’s successes have far outpace setbacks.

King’s achievements were recognized in 2019 when she was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People. Her influence in the media is matched by her financial success. As of 2024, King’s net worth is estimated at $80 million, according to Assets Magazine, though other outlets have it ranging from $40 million to $72 million. This wealth is a culmination of her work at CBS, where she earns a reported $12 million annually, along with income from book royalties, real estate investments, and other ventures. King’s real estate portfolio includes properties in Malibu, Miami, and upstate New York, and her collection of luxury cars.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, King is also known for her philanthropy. She supports organizations like UNICEF, March of Dimes, and various causes related to children, the arts, and education.
