Bronny James’ $10M Net Worth and Lucrative Lakers Deal Spark Backlash as Shaq and Barkley Say He Belongs In G League

Bronny James, son of NBA superstar LeBron James, has officially entered the NBA as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. Bronny’s journey to professional basketball was unique, and in the process he has racked up an impressive net worth in a short time.

Before becoming professional, he inked strong NIL deals during his single season at the University of Southern California (USC). His NIL contracts with Nike, Beats by Dre, and PSD Underwear have reportedly earned him an estimated $5.9 million, Sporting News reports. This financial foundation, along with endorsements, has helped Bronny accumulate an estimated net worth of around $10 million so far.

How He Made His Millions

Now, as the Lakers’ second-round draft pick in June, Bronny has signed a four-year rookie contract worth $7.9 million, beginning with $1.15 million for the 2024-25 season and increasing to a potential $2.49 million by the final year if the Lakers exercise their team option, according to ESPN.

Meanwhile, LeBron James, at nearly 40, remains a top earner in the NBA. With a net worth estimated at $1.2 billion, LeBron extended his contract to a two-year, $104 million contract that includes a player option for 2025-26 and a no-trade clause, ESPN reports. This father-son pairing has created a legacy in the NBA, marking the first time in history that a father and son have played together professionally.

Basketball Backlash

But the pairing has not come without controversy, with some former players questioning Bronny’s skills and even his contract. Former Lakers star Shaquille O’Neal and Phoenix Suns legend Charles Barkley during their TNT show “Inside the NBA” said Bronny needs to work on his skills in the G League, the NBA developmental league who aren’t ready for the top level. Another former Lakers star, Magic Johnson, has said Bronny will be a good NBA player one day.

And some have speculated that his career with the Lakers could be short judging from his recent cameo on Oct. 22. In their three minutes playing with his father, Bronny missed both shot attempts while the Lakers fell behind by five points, sparking backlash. Some in the media labeled the father-son duo’s appearance a “sideshow” that detracted from the game.
