Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown’s family home in Wellesley, Massachusetts, was targeted in an attempted robbery on Dec. 15, adding to a growing list of high-profile athletes victimized by home invasions, Morning Star reported.
What Happened
The $7.8 million mansion, listed under Brown’s mother Mechalle’s name but serving as his primary residence, was occupied by her and Brown’s nephew at the time of the incident. No one was harmed, and nothing was stolen from the seven-bedroom estate located in Wellesley’s prestigious Dana Hall neighborhood, according to Realtor.com.
Police responded to a call around 8:20 p.m., finding evidence of forced entry, including a broken window. Surveillance footage reportedly showed three suspects in gray sweatshirts attempting to break into the property. Police are continuing their investigation.
Brown, 28, was in Washington, D.C., for a game against the Wizards during the break-in. The incident follows a pattern of burglaries targeting athletes, with Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow also experiencing breakins this year, according to Realtor.com.
During a postgame media session after the Celtics’ loss to the Bulls on Dec. 19–four days after the break-in, Brown commented, “We’re all right. We’ll deal with situations accordingly. Thank God nothing serious or physical or threatening happened, but the fact that it could have kind of lingers in your mind.”
He added, “It’s been a tough week. Obviously, my mother’s security is of utmost importance to me and has been compromised, and so it’s been a tough week. We’ve had media members and reporters outside our house trying to get an inside scoop, but have some respect. It’s been a tough week; I’m not going to lie.”
Brown gave out some advise for fellow homeowners, “Hopefully anybody who it hasn’t happened to yet, make sure you have things in place to make sure that it doesn’t. But obviously to go through that experience, people still in there, and still in the crib, it just makes you think about some things differently.”
Brown, who signed a record-breaking five-year, $304 million “supermax” contract with the Celtics in 2023, purchased the Wellesley home in 2020. The mansion covers 1.53 acres.
Aside from his Wellesley home, Brown has listed his Boston penthouse for $4.75 million, though it has yet to sell.
