Despite Tyler Perry’s Billionaire Status, His Young Son Flies Coach and Does Not Get Lavish Christmas Presents

Aman Perry may be the son of one of Hollywood’s most successful entertainment moguls, but he is living life outside of the limelight and without a ton of luxuries.

Money Lessons For Young Son

“My son’s not famous. I want him to have as normal a life as he can,” his father, Tyler Perry told AARP. “I want him to know what it’s like to have his own name and his own life and not have the pressure of trying to live up to whatever or whoever your father was.”

Aman is the 10-year-old son of the producer and director. His mother is model and social activist Gelila Bekele. Perry, who recently produced the Netflix film “The Six Triple Eight,” is worth a reported $1.4 billion. Bekele and Perry began dating in 2007. Aman was born in 2014. But by 2020, the couple split, reportedly remaining amicable and co-parenting their son. One of Bekele and Perry’s biggest agreements as co-parents: not spoiling their Aman. On many occasions, Perry has shared that he and Bekele want Aman to have an understanding of the value of money — how it is earned and spent.

“We both are very clear-eyed about him not being this spoiled kid,” Perry told People. “And when you start seeing hints of that, that’s got to be nipped in the bud right away.”

In addition to owning Tyler Perry Studios, several residences, and a private airplane, Perry admits that Aman would often fly coach when traveling. Perry and Bekele agreed to have Aman fly coach after he began complaining about commercial flights at 5 years old.

“He’d be going somewhere and he would say, ‘I want to be on Dad’s plane. I want to be on Dad’s plane!'” Perry told People. “For about four years, he flew with her commercial in coach so that he could understand.”

This is just one of many co-parenting choices Bekele and Perry made to keep Aman from becoming too spoiled and entitled.

Perry has shared that Aman does not have lavish birthdays or Christmas mornings–one or two gifts are given to the 10-year-old.

Finally, Perry is teaching Aman about using credit and buying power. One day, Aman called Perry, requesting to use his credit card. Aman had previously witnessed Perry using his credit card to purchase toys.

“No, son,” Perry said. “That’s just plastic, but you have to pay for it. You have to have a job.”
