A unique estate sale will take place at a West Philadelphia property once owned by boxing legend Muhammad Ali, now an iconic property with ties to both the athlete and NBA star Kobe Bryant’s family. On Feb. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the public can explore and purchase items from the Overbrook Park home at 1835 N. 72nd St.
Ali Once Lived Here
Ali lived here briefly in the early 1970s, purchasing the property in 1970 after being stripped of his heavyweight title for refusing to fight in the Vietnam War. He used the home as a retreat while training for his boxing comeback. In 1973, he sold the house to the grandparents of Kobe Bryant, Mildred and Joe Cox, who lived there for over five decades. The late Mildred Cox, Kobe’s grandmother, passed away last year, and the home was recently sold.
The estate sale is being run by Sales By Helen, a Bryn Mawr-based company. John Romani, the company’s owner, anticipates a large crowd, driven by the home’s star-studded past.
“It gets chaotic,” Romani told the Philly Voice “We’ve been in business for 35 years and we’ve done thousands of sales. We focus now primarily on sales that are very interesting or over the top.”
Shoppers will find an array of furniture, decor, kitchenware, and barware, with some items dating back to the 1970s. While it’s unclear whether Ali’s personal belongings remain in the home, many of the items belonged to Kobe Bryant’s grandparents.
“The top tier is the lookie-loos, they’re coming just to be in Ali’s house. They want to see the architecture, the house, they want to walk through it,” Romani noted. “Then there’s the people who want to own a piece of something. They love owning a piece of these estates. They just like to have a piece of the history. And then the next tier is the resellers, people who are buying this stuff to flip online or at flea markets.”
He added, “I do not know if any of Ali’s stuff is there. Some of this stuff does look like it’s from the 1970s, but I’m not sure anything of his is left. Who knows? It’s all cool. It’s retro and it’s vibey.”
Romani pointed out a brass Hollywood Regency wheat table, priced at $250.
“A lot of people, they know it was Ali’s house and Kobe’s grandparents’ house, so they’re going to try to photo match some stuff,” Romani said. “People will buy a table in hopes that they can find a picture of Kobe at his grandmother’s house. That would be the icing on the cake. In the antiques business, we call that provenance. The added provenance will certainly help you resell an item.”
The property is expected to be fully settled later this month, and though the exact sale price isn’t public yet, the home was assessed at $581,500 in 2023.
