Reality star Kim Kardashian disclosed during the latest episode of season 6 of “The Kardashians” that she was forced to return her 20.5-carat engagement ring to ex-husband Kris Humphries as part of their divorce settlement—despite having paid for the majority of it herself. The SKIMS founder explained that during divorce negotiations, while pregnant with her daughter North, Humphries demanded the return of the $2 million ring, even though he had only contributed “a fifth” of its cost.
The revelation came as Kardashian, draped in diamonds at the lavish $600 million Ambani wedding in India, talked about her various engagement rings over her last three marriages.
The Ring
“I didn’t keep that [ring],” she says in The Kardashians. “I was pregnant with North, still married to him. And in order to divorce him, he said I had to give him the ring in my divorce — that I bought. He contributed a fifth.”
Humphries not only took back the emerald-cut diamond but subsequently auctioned it off for significantly less than its reported value.
The ring in question, created by celebrity jeweler Lorraine Schwartz, ultimately went to auction at Christie’s in October 2013. Listed discreetly as “Property of a Gentleman,” the auction house described it as “an impressive diamond ring” featuring a 16.21-carat rectangular-cut center diamond flanked by two 1.80-carat trapeze-cut diamonds.
Though initially valued at approximately $2 million, the ring sold for a mere $749,000, with Humphries reportedly pledging that a portion of the proceeds would benefit an unspecified charity.
“It is 100 percent the same ring,” an unnamed source close to Kardashian told Us Weekly at the time. “Kim has been waiting for the day he would auction it. Everyone always asked what Kim did with the ring — she silently gave it back over a year ago! And Kris waited until the divorce was final to sell it.”
The couple’s relationship began through mutual connections in the professional basketball world. Humphries, then playing for the Brooklyn Nets, was introduced to Kardashian by teammate Jordan Farmar in 2010. Though they initially kept their relationship private, Kardashian was frequently photographed courtside at Barclays Center that fall, eventually making their romance public, InStyle reported.
The relationship progressed swiftly to marriage.
Within a month of going public, Kardashian began sharing Humphries’ baby photos and speaking affectionately about him in interviews. During an interview, she shared that Humphries would occasionally serenade her over the phone singer her own song, “Jam (Turn It Up).”
After only six months of dating, Humphries proposed with the now-infamous 20.5-carat diamond in May 2011. Their August wedding that same year became a media spectacle, culminating in a two-part special on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” However, the marriage famously lasted just 72 days before Kardashian filed for divorce.
In contrast to the lost Humphries ring, Kardashian mentions in the recent episode that she still possesses her 14-carat cushion-cut ring from her first marriage to music producer Damon Thomas, whom she wed at 19 and divorced nearly four years later.
She also revealed that she’s keeping the 15-carat cushion-cut diamond ring from her third husband, Kanye West, for their daughter North, who was present at their engagement.
As for future nuptials, Kardashian jokingly referred to any potential fourth marriage as her “last and final hurrah,” wondering aloud what her “next ring shape will be.”
She also spoke about, according to Decider, she also talked about wearing expensive jewelry in public again after her 2016 Paris robbery.
The billionaire influencer and business mogul, seems to have maintained her sense of humor about her matrimonial history — even if one particularly valuable reminder of it ended up on the auction block.
