‘I Bribed Them’: Ayesha Curry Says She Paid Her Daughter $20 to Tidy Up

Before building a multi-faceted lifestyle brand and business empire, Ayesha Curry was navigating early motherhood and marriage in her early 20s — experiences she says shaped her approach to parenting and entrepreneurship alike.

Now 36, the chef, author, and entrepreneur opened up about her journey on a recent episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. Curry recalled marrying NBA star Steph Curry at just 22 and becoming pregnant with their first daughter not long afterward.

“I was thinking we were going to be, like, bar hopping,” she said. “It’s like, nope, you’re pregnant.”

Today, Curry is the mother of four children between the ages of one and 13. She shared humorous and relatable stories from parenting, including discovering a piece of her lingerie in her young son’s pocket, and paying her oldest daughter and niece $20 to clean the kitchen and living room.

“I bribed them,” she laughed.

Parenting experts note that giving children household responsibilities can have long-term benefits. A 2018 study published in the Journal of Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics found that kindergartners with chores had better social skills, academic performance, and overall life satisfaction by third grade.

“Giving our children more chores not only helps them become responsible, it teaches them useful skills for when they’re on their own,” wrote Margot Machol Bisnow, author of “Raising an Entrepreneur,” for CNBC Make It.

For Curry, responsibility was instilled at a young age — though she wasn’t paid for it. “Back in my day, I wouldn’t have had that opportunity,” she said. “I would’ve just had to do it.”

That work ethic has carried over into a robust career. Beyond her best-selling cookbooks and television appearances, Curry has launched a cookware line and founded Sweet July, a lifestyle brand and media platform promoting intentional living.

From unexpected motherhood to managing a growing business portfolio, Curry continues to juggle it all with humor, discipline, and hustle — traits she hopes to pass on to her children.
