Isiah Thomas Didn’t Splash His NBA Earnings on Bling. Here’s How He Spent His Millions

For most professional athletes, the first big contract marks the beginning of consumption. For Isiah Thomas, it marked the beginning of triage.

Thomas has been candid that his NBA earnings were never earmarked for lifestyle upgrades. According to him, his financial goals were directed almost entirely toward stabilizing an extended family still living in poverty. The story of how he did this recently resurfaced in the Basketball Network.

Over a 13-year NBA career, Thomas earned an estimated $16.7 million in salary. By today’s standards, that figure is modest; but it seems Thomas used his income to relocate relatives, secure housing and cover basic necessities.

“I spent all my NBA money cleaning up my family, laying the foundation so they’ll have a chance to get out of poverty, my nieces, my nephews, my kids, my cousins,” the baller said in an interview with Forbes.

Growing up on Chicago’s South Side, Thomas found a financial way forward through basketball. And he said he used to help the family left behind. But he seemingly pointed out that support was not permanent, but a stepping stone. He offered six-month internships within his businesses to young family members to expose them to professional environments and expectations.

He continued, “I still have some that don’t eat or are living in hard times, but for the most part, the thing that I’m most proud of is that most of my nieces, nephews, when they go to the refrigerator, there’s some food in the refrigerator. When they leave their job, they have a house to go to, an apartment to stay in, and most of them have either graduated from college, or had two-three years of college.”

This strategy carried into Thomas’ post-NBA career. Long before athlete investing became fashionable, he built a diversified portfolio through his investment operations. He later founded Isiah International LLC, a holding company with interests spanning real estate, waste management, recycling, finance, consumer goods, private aviation, e-commerce, and cannabis, according to Basketball Network.

His ownership of Gre3n Waste Removal and Re3 Recycling, with his daughter Lauren, places him squarely in the waste-management and environmental-services space, while his involvement with Eleven Capital Group signals a continued interest in financial services and deal-making beyond sports and entertainment.

That same steady approach has defined Thomas’s earlier business moves.

He once led American Speedy Printing Centers Inc. out of bankruptcy, overseeing a turnaround that surprised skeptics, according to the Seattle Times.

His real estate arm, Isiah International Real Estate, focuses primarily on development projects in the Chicago area, reinforcing his ties to the city where much of his legacy was built. Its mission is rooted in creating affordable housing.

Ownership and operational control—not endorsement income—became the engine of his wealth.

Thomas also became one of the first African-American NBA owners as part of the Toronto Raptors’ original ownership group and later made history as the first Black person elected to the Chicago Stock Exchange’s board of governors. His estimated net worth today is widely reported to be around $100 million, built through reinvestment and capital deployment rather than spectacle.

Real estate has been a cornerstone of that growth, particularly in distressed urban markets. Thomas has positioned himself as both investor and operator, emphasizing redevelopment that brings durable economic activity rather than speculative returns. The approach mirrors his personal financial philosophy: stabilize first, then grow.

Occasional cultural controversies still surface. In 2025, comments about LeBron James’ pregame attire had fans of a different generation calling him a hater. Still, others see him as a man of principles and focus, refusing to glamorize the conditions that have shackled so many in his community.
