Chauncey Billups has pleaded not guilty to allegations of money laundering and wire fraud tied to a sweeping federal gambling case. Prosecutors claim he acted as a “face card,” using his NBA fame to attract wealthy gamblers to allegedly rigged card games.

Billups entered the plea in a Brooklyn federal courtroom shortly after Easter 2026. Each charge carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years.
The Hall of Famer has denied all wrongdoing as the case moves forward.
Billups has an estimated net worth of approximately $35 million as of late 2025. A former NBA Finals MVP, Billups earned nearly $107 million during his 17-year playing career.
Prosecutors claim Billups used his reputation to draw high-net-worth individuals into high-stakes poker games in cities such as Manhattan and Las Vegas, where games were allegedly manipulated to defraud participants, according to The New York Times.
ESPN reported on March 3 that Billups is one of 31 defendants in the case, which prosecutors tie to organized crime figures and spans dozens of games between 2019 and 2023.
Authorities say he may have gone beyond being a celebrity draw, alleging he was aware of, and at times participated in, cheating schemes involving signals used to rig outcomes.
The case also centers on Billups’ alleged relationship with Eric “Spook” Earnest, a career criminal with ties to the Black Mafia Family.
Prosecutors describe the two as longtime associates who participated in illegal poker games and, at times, coordinated actions at the table.
According to ESPN, text messages tied to an October 2020 poker game show discussions among Earnest, alleged organizer Sophie “Pookie” Wei, and Robert Stroud, a Kentucky man with alleged ties to the Gambino crime family, about having Billups and Earnest intentionally lose hands to avoid raising suspicion.
Investigators say the messages suggest Billups was familiar with the signals used to rig the games.
According to The New York Times, investigators also allege an insider betting scheme in which Billups shared nonpublic NBA information, including team strategy, with Earnest, who then passed the information to bettors to place wagers.
Billups has since posted a $5 million bond and is currently out on bonf under travel restrictions.
He has taken an indefinite leave from his role as head coach of the Trail Blazers as the case moves forward, with a potential trial expected to take months, if not years, to fully resolve.
Billups earned approximately $4.7 million during the 2024–25 season after signing a two-year contract extension with the Trail Blazers.
