Singer Teyana Taylor has been named in a legal claim over unpaid rent for a Harlem, New York, space a nail salon once called home. According to the suit, the building owner claims that Teyana was the lease guarantor and therefore is responsible for the unpaid rent.
The famed singer, whose net worth is around $5 million, is being sued by her landlord for $49,000 in the New York State Supreme Court.
The lawsuit was filed on Aug. 30 against the now-closed Junie Bee Nails, Inc, a nail salon named after her first daughter with former Knicks baller and NBA champion Iman Shumpert.
Landlord Wants the Rent Money
The nail business was located in a Harlem building at 2330 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd., which belongs to 2330 Seventh Owner LLC.
A woman named Monique Taylor is also named in the suit; she is listed with New York’s Department of State as Junie Bee Nails’ registered agent but it is not clear what the connection is between the two Taylor women.
Teyana’s Lease Agreement
Teyana signed a 10-year lease in February 2017, The Grio reports. And she owes nearly $50,000 in rent, which goes back to January 2019. The lawsuit also states that the business left the space on Feb. 29, 2020. The salon was reportedly abandoned, with the landlord saying the singer being bound to pay the rent owed to the end of the lease, which would be January 2027.
According to New York’s state department corporations division, Junie Bee Nails was not open for business but remained an “active” business.
“It saddens us to announce that Junie Bee will not be returning to this location,” read the statement on social media about the salon closing. “Junie Bee strives to excel as a black owned business and now its time to OWN A BLOCK! As a culture it’s imperative to expand our business standards to completely OWN the establishment that we operate out of!”
Teyana announced last year she was returning to music and has been on a “retirement tour.” At a recent show in London at the O2 Academy Brixton, Janet Jackson made a surprise appearance at Teyana’s concert.
Reflecting on the surprise in the caption of her post, Taylor wrote on Instagram, “Soooooooooooo London had me in shambles & crying like a full blown babyyyyyyyy! To my days ones…y’all ALREADY know what these full circle moments meant to me!!!! The love, the energy, the raw emotions, the vibes, THEE ICON JANET JACKSON!!!!!!!!! Do u hear me?!!! Jackson answered back, “I really enjoyed watching you on stage. I luv you and miss you already sis @teyanataylor.” Taylor, naturally, hopped in the comments section and thanked her idol once again for being there for her, saying, “I love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu and miss you too!! thank you for everything always.”
