Sweet July, an Uptown Oakland cafe owned by Ayesha Curry, the wife of NBA champion Stephen Curry, was vandalized over the weekend.
Curry’s cafe was burglarized on October 1 before 6:30 a.m., the San Francisco Gate reported.
The Break-In
The cafe had its glass shattered, and some of its items were stolen, the Oakland Police Department spokesperson Candace Keas told the San Francisco outlet. A description of the items was not given by the police.
The OPD also stated that the Sweet July cafe might have been broken in by more than one person.
“When officers arrived they learned that an individual(s) gained access to the business by shattering the entrance glass,” Keas told the Gate. “The individual(s) entered the business and took several items from the location prior to leaving.”
The cafe, which opened its doors in January 2021, temporarily closed but reopened on Oct. 2.
An investigation is ongoing with the police asking anyone for information on the OPD burglary section.
What is Sweet July
The Black-owned coffee shop sells home-baked goods as well as products from other local Bay area businesses. Sweet July is a cross-branded company–there is the brick-and-mortar location, a product line, and a magazine.
“Sweet July is a feeling of happiness for me, a time when all the things that are good in my life happened. My hope is to encourage everyone to find their own version of Sweet July. It’s a feeling, a thought, a phrase, and I hope it will become a movement,” Curry said, according to her website.
Sweet July also partners with other companies. Sweet July partnered with Steeped Coffee, a certified B Corp and Benefit Corporation in August. Curry selected Steeped Coffee for Sweet July’s Subscription Box. The box, which debuted in this month, features an exclusive preview of the new Sweet July house blend single-serve steeped coffee packs, which will be available soon on SweetJuly.com. The single-serve steeped packs, which are brewed like tea bags are fully compostable and require no specialty brewing equipment.
Curry’s Companies
The cafe is not the only eatery Curry, whose net worth is $10 million, owns. She is the co-owner of International Smoke, an intercontinental BBQ restaurant with award-winning chef Michael Mina. International Smoke has locations in San Francisco, Del Mar, and Las Vegas.
Curry’s Food Career
After getting married, she started a food blog, and then a YouTube channel. Curry then had a short-lived Food Network show called “Ayesha’s Homemade,” which ran for just 13 episodes. In 2016, she released her cookbook “The Seasoned Life.” She launched another Food Network show called “Ayesha’s Homemade,” which follows her professional and personal life with cameos from her husband and two daughters.
In July 2019, Curry and her husband launched the “Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation” to work to end childhood hunger, increase access to quality education, and create safe spaces for children to stay active.
