Hollywood powerhouse Tyler Perry is back to making deals. The “Madea” star/director/producer has inked a four picture-deal with Amazon Studios.
Launched in 2010, Amazon Studios is a subsidiary of Amazon and specializes in developing television series and distributing and producing films.
Under the deal, which was announced by Amazon Studios on Nov. 28, Perry will write, direct and produce four features for release on Amazon Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Prime Video Pact
Prime Video, a subscription video on-demand, over-the-top streaming and rental service of Amazon, has been busy. Perry is the latest Black creator to sign on with Prime. Over the last year or so, Prime has inked deals with Eddie Murphy, Michael B. Jordan, and Donald “Childish Gambino” Glover, Variety reported.
“I’m excited and grateful to start working with Amazon Studios to bring movies to Prime Video,” said Perry in a press statement.
Perry’s Projects
The billionaire has been busy as well. His most recent film, “A Jazzman’s Blues,” world premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September and was released by Netflix later that month. He wrote, directed and produced the film, which was developed from his first screenplay written 27 years ago. Perry also added to the “Madea” lineup with “A Madea Homecoming.” He wrote, directed, executive produced and stars in the 12th installment in the popular “Madea” franchise. And he completed the thriller “A Fall from Grace.” All three of these projects were released by Netflix.
For television, Perry has created, directed and written several series for BET and BET+, including “The Oval,” “Assisted Living,” “Bruh,” “Sistas,” “Zatima” and “Ruthless.” It was reported last year that Perry was considering ending his $150 million per-year BET+ contract for a new streaming home.
As Finurah previously reported, in 2019, Tyler Perry signed a deal with Viacom (now Paramount Global) for a reported $150 million per year. The terms of this deal, which reportedly runs through 2024, are not public but Perry agreed to create new titles for the service (both film and television) and acquired a 25 percent equity stake in BET+, where the programming would also live.
Perry shoots a majority of his projects at his own Atlanta-based production studio, Tyler Perry Studios, which moved to a new location in 2019. According to Paramount Pictures, the studio encompasses 330 acres, has an airport terminal, a strip mall, two baseball fields, a golf course, a residential neighborhood and a near-exact replica of the White House as well as its own exit sign on Georgia State Route 166.
