Actress and singer Teyana Taylor may have secretly filed for divorce from her husband, Iman Shumpert in January, but their ongoing court battle has become very public. And so far it seems there is not a prenup in place as one has yet to be mentioned in reports and the back-and-forth banter between the two millionaires.
The ongoing divorce battle is surprising for many as the couple has consistently shared their love for each other online and through the VH1 reality show, “Teyana and Iman.” They also appeared as a family with their kids in an advertising campaign for Kim Kardashian’s Skims brand.
However, they are now fighting over custody, child support and other finances.
What’s At Stake Financially
Taylor is reportedly worth $5 million. As a recording artist, she has released three well-received albums and has been featured on music by Jay-Z and Kanye West. As an actress, she has appeared in films such as “A Thousand and One,” “White Men Can’t Jump,” “Stomp the Yard: Homecoming,” “Madea’s Big Happy Family,” and the upcoming “Coming 2 America.”
As a retired NBA player, Shumpert has played for teams such as the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, the Sacramento Kings, the Houston Rockets, and the Brooklyn Nets. Shumpert has a reported net worth of $20 million.
Shumpert recently filed a motion to discuss Taylor’s finances in a discovery hearing. However, according to RadarOnline, the court denied his motion. And earlier this month, Taylor accused Shumpert of making their marriage problems public by requesting that the court substitute their names instead of using initials. Shumpert denied the accusation and instead said that Taylor released the information to the press several months earlier.
Allegations of Jealousy and Cheating Lead To Divorce
Taylor and Shumpert began dating in 2014 and have been married for seven years. They share two daughters and live primarily in the Atlanta area.
Taylor filed for divorce in January, purportedly by only using the couple’s initials to avoid making it public. Several months later, the couple put the proceedings on hold and attended counseling in an attempt to remain married. However, by September, their attempts at reconciling had failed. According to Yahoo, Taylor and Shumpert are currently living in two separate homes.
In Taylor’s petition, she accused Shumpert of being emotionally manipulative throughout their marriage while enduring the fallout of his DUI arrest and cheating allegations.
According to her attorney, Taylor “helped [Iman] overcome these obstacles during their marriage, and the [Teyana] even helped [Iman] rebrand himself after his multiple scandals. Thereafter, [Iman] was arrested in an airport for marijuana possession, was arrested for a DUI, and even crashed the [Teyana’s] Rolls Royce Dawn and abandoned the vehicle to avoid a second DUI.”
Taylor also accused Shumpert of being jealous of her career despite making significantly more as an NBA player.
RadarOnline reports the couple attended mediation sessions throughout October and November to remain amicable. However, no deals were reached and they are now in court as Taylor believes the marriage has been “irretrievably broken.” Taylor is demanding primary physical custody of their daughters and child support.
