The CEO of Tesla and Space X is currently living in unassuming three-bedroom ranch-style house that he claims is worth just $50,000.
Inside Elon Musk’s Tiny Abode
Located only a block from SpaceX’s Starbase production facility and two miles from the Mexican border, this small dwelling marks a significant shift from Musk’s previous real estate portfolio, which included multiple multi-million-dollar California mansions, The Daily Mail reports.
The Boca Chica area, once a quiet retirement village, has become a focal point of aerospace activity since SpaceX established its test facility in 2014. The billionaire’s house, which he rents from his own company, blends in with the surrounding area, though it’s outfitted with distinctive touches that only Musk could bring: Tesla-made solar panels covering the roof and a SpaceX-inspired kids’ playhouse in the backyard, complete with a custom-built rocket-shaped swing.
In 2020, Musk, who also own X/Twitter, announced plans to sell his physical possessions, including his real estate, and follow a minimalist lifestyle. True to his word, he sold off seven California mansions for roughly $127 million, claiming his primary home is now this modest Texas house, according to the Chronicle. It’s a very short commute to his workplace.
Whitewashed walls and high-tech solar panels are some of the upgrades Musk has made to the property, which spans just over 1,500 square feet. And he added a few plants. To ensure privacy and security, an imposing 8-foot fence surrounds the house, and a network of surveillance cameras, some discreetly hidden in the tops of palm trees, monitor the premises around the clock. Musk’s security detail resides next door, guarding the property alongside several additional cameras and Starlink satellite dishes, ensuring fast, reliable internet.
A Family Space with Galactic Touches
The 53-year-old tech billionaire known for his mega MAGA donations shares two young children with his on-and-off partner, the musician Grimes, and has transformed the backyard into a playful oasis for them. There’s even a rocket-shaped playhouse.
Despite these personal touches, neighbors report that Musk remains largely out of sight when he is in town, often arriving late at night accompanied by bodyguards, The Daily Mail reports.
