Oklahoma City Thunder star Jalen Williams has had the kind of rise many athletes only dream about. Just three years ago he was a relatively unknown college player. Today, he’s an NBA champion, an All-Star, and the recipient of a massive $287 million contract extension. But according to Williams, the best part of his success isn’t what he’s bought for himself, it’s what he’s done for his family.
The Gift of Gifts
Recently speaking to TMZ Sports, the 24-year-old revealed that his biggest flex so far? Retiring his parents.
“It’s surreal,” Williams said. “I know everybody kind of uses that term, but it’s wild because it happened really fast. Within three years, my life is completely different. But yeah, I’ve been fortunate enough to retire my parents.”
Jalen’s parents, Ronald and Nicole Williams, are both U.S. Air Force veterans. His father worked for more than 20 years as a jet engine mechanic and logistics specialist. His mother served in the military’s medical field. Meanwhile Jalen was a college standout at Santa Clara, then as the 12th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.
Since entering the NBA, Williams has been on a tear. In the 2024–25 season, he averaged 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. He played a vital role in the Thunder’s run to the 2025 NBA Championship, including a 40-point breakout performance in Game 5 of the Finals against the Indiana Pacers.
Williams’ younger brother Cody is also making his own mark in the NBA as a rising star with the Utah Jazz.
“It’s just been a lot,” Williams said to TMZ. “I still have to process it all. Obviously, winning a championship, the contract extension, my brother getting drafted… I’m just trying to take it one step at a time.”
And so far Williams has yet to splurge on himself.
