Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has helped lead his team to the Super Bowl, but many observers say the Kansas City Chiefs shot caller should head the list of top-paid players annually.
In September, the 28-year-old NFLer’s restructured the “unprecedented” and “historic” he signed in 2020. It was valued at $450 million over ten years and was the largest contract in NFL history at the time, which gave him an annual salary of $45 million. This ranked him as eighth in annual average value (AAV).
After the restructuring, he got $210.6 million between 2023 and 2026 — again a historic amount over a four-year span, the NFL reported. This bumped up his annual average salary to $52.5 million, which is now just below Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow with $55 million and tying him with L.A. Chargers’ quarterback Justin Herbert, also with $52.5 million.
Making Money Elsewhere
In addition to his NFL career, Mahomes, with a net worth of $70 million, is making investments in other sports ventures. He recently joined a group of investors backing Formula 1 team Alpine, adding to his portfolio of sports investments, brands, and businesses, Investopedia reported.
Mahomes has investments in the MLB team Kansas City Royals, the women’s soccer team Kansas City Current, as well as several sports wellness companies, among other ventures.
Mahomes holds a stake in Whoop, a wearable fitness tracker valued at $3.6 billion as of 2021. Additionally, he is invested in Hyperice, a company specializing in massage guns and hot and cold therapy devices for sports recovery, which was valued at $700 million in 2020. In July 2023, Hyperice received $100 million in capital from an investment firm.
And, Mahomes has investments in KMO Burgers, an expansion project by the Texas fast-food chain Whataburger. Being a Texas native himself, Mahomes played a role in opening the first Whataburger location in Kansas City back in 2022.
Big Promise
If his team wins the Super Bowl, he’s promises a pricy gift for his teammates. “This is a business trip. I told the guys that if we win I’ll bring everyone back to Vegas to celebrate,” Mahomes said, CBS Sports reported.
