Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton is not only known for his signature hats and prowess on the football field, but also for making controversial remarks that cause conflicts.
Just recently, the free agent was recorded fighting in a video that went viral on Sunday. On Saturday, two youth development teams — Newton’s C1N and Top Shelf Performance — were competing at a football event. According to USA Today, the two men fighting against Newton allege that he started the conflict–not them.
Newton, who purportedly has a net worth of $75 million, played in the NFL for ten years, mainly for the Carolina Panthers. In addition, his endorsements with brands such as Gatorade, Beats by Dre, Dannon and Under Armour have solidified Newton as one of the most popular football players.
Yet Newton’s fight has former NFL players commenting on his actions. Newton was allegedly taunting the other team’s coaches by yelling, “I know that play,” “I taught you everything you know,” “I made y’all” and “I’m your daddy, ” USA Today reports.
By Sunday, the fight had gone viral on several social media platforms showing the Heisman Trophy winner fighting several opposing coaches. While TopShelf Performance issued an apology for their participation in the melee, Newton has not.
Controversy Follows Newton
Yet this is not the first time that Newton has been embroiled in controversy as a result of his words. In 2022, Newton’s comments about women’s gender roles caused scrutiny amongst fans and critics alike.
Newton shared that womanhood is “handling your own but knowing how to cater to a man’s needs.” He also argued that if a woman defines herself as a ‘boss b*tch” that if a woman He also said that, when a woman declares herself to be a “boss bitch,” and “can’t cook. You don’t know when to be quiet. You don’t know how to allow a man to lead,” she is problematic.
In 2017, Newton told a woman sports reporter “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes. It’s funny.” The statement caused NFL officials to issue a statement against Newton’s remarks.
A Free Agent and Entrepreneur
In addition to his endorsements, Newton is an entrepreneur and real estate investor.
In 2019, Newton established the Fellaship restaurant and cigar bar in Atlanta. In 2013, Belk department stores carried MADE by Cam Newton.
Early in Newton’s career, he began investing in real estate. In 2012, he purchased a 3,335-square-foot condominium in Charlotte’s The Trust for $1.6 million. Newton sold the residence in 2020 to Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo ball for almost $3 million.
