Lauren Sánchez and Jeff Bezos are gearing up for one of the most extravagant weddings of the decade, but a recent comparison to Princess Diana’s legendary 1981 British royal wedding to then-Prince Charles has left many rolling their eyes. The remark came from Sánchez’s brother, Paul Sánchez, who was caught on camera outside a Home Depot, claiming that the upcoming nuptials would be “like a Princess Di thing.”
To put it lightly, many think the comparison is a stretch.
Fit for a Princess?
Princess Diana’s wedding to Charles was a historic event, watched by 750 million people globally, symbolizing both fairytale romance and the enduring traditions of the British monarchy. Held at London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral, the ceremony was highlighted by one of the most iconic wedding dresses in history, a 25-foot train for the young bride. Diana, later known as the “People’s Princess,” went on to become a humanitarian icon.
By contrast, Bezos and Sánchez’s over-the-top affair is shaping up to be a billionaire’s playdate. The wedding is reportedly taking place in Venice, with hundreds of guests, a fleet of water taxis and gondolas booked, and the city’s officials working to minimize disruption. Their $500 million yacht, Koru, is expected to be a key part of the festivities.
“The many speculations and fake news circulating about Jeff Bezos’ wedding are completely unfounded,” the city of Venice wrote in a statement. “Only two hundred guests will have been invited and therefore it will be easy for Venice to accommodate such an event, without any disruption whatsoever to the city, its residents and visitors.”
Online reactions to Paul Sánchez’s comment were beyond brutal. “No one and I mean NO ONE can top Diana, period,” one user wrote. Another posted, “Capitalist Barbie can try, but she will fail.”
Many pointed out that Diana’s wedding, despite its grandeur, was rooted in a sense of duty and tradition, while Bezos and Sánchez’s event is a private, ultra-wealthy spectacle of excess.
A star-studded guest list is rumored to include Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. The world will have to wait to see if there will be any semblance to Princess Di’s celebrated wedding.
