Brad Pitt is living in a $40 million cliffside estate in Carmel-by-the-Sea, a secluded, celebrity-favored enclave on California’s Monterey Peninsula known for its storybook charm and historic architecture, The Wall Street Journal reported.
A Place Called Home
It seems Pitt is living his softest life yet — far from the chaos of Hollywood and deep into his “quiet luxury” era with girlfriend Ines de Ramon. The Oscar winner has been spotted spending cozy nights at his oceanfront estate where locals claim to give him space, The Daily Mail reports.
The couple, who have been together three years, has been spotted dining out and shopping locally.
Pitt, who is starring in “F1” and is set to be at the movie’s premiere in NYC on June 16, says he lives “pretty” having bought the 1918 historic D.L. James House, also known as “Seaward,” in 2022, the most expensive purchase in the area, according to the Daily Mail.
Pitt seems to invest a lot in his privacy, with much of the property’s inside being mysterious. He does not have social media or any social media presence for that matter.
The house on the rocks has a history: Daniel Lewis “D.L.” James, a wealthy Kansas City businessman and playwright who was a first cousin, once removed, of the infamous outlaw Jesse James, commissioned famed architect Charles Sumner Greene for the project with the task of designing a granite house on his land in the Carmel Highlands where it could be perched atop a rocky outcropping above the Pacific Ocean.
The house is built from the rocks themselves, locally quarried stones with golden granite hauled in by horse-drawn carts from a nearby quarry, according to Carmel Magazine. The mansion has a grand arched window that is hand-crafted from teak and has a great view of the Pacific Ocean.
It is ironic that Pitt played Jesse James “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” in 2007.
The main house is said to be 3,793 square feet on its 2.51 acres of land. The property has three bedrooms and four bathrooms. A caretaker’s cottage was built in 1940 and features one bedroom and one bathroom.
Not too many people live near the area, as Carmel-by-the-Sea has a population of just around 3,000, including Clint Eastwood, who served as Carmel’s mayor in the 1980s, and the late Betty White, who owned a home in nearby Carmel Highlands, W Magazine reported.
The area has some mainstream attention as it was the scenic backdrop for HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” with many key scenes filmed in Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Big Sur.
