The Job She Left Behind
Long before Margot Robbie was stepping onto red carpets and collecting Academy Award nominations, she was spreading mayonnaise to every six-inch sub.
In a 2020 interview on Hot Ones, the “Barbie” and “Bombshell” star reflected on her time working at a Subway in Melbourne, Australia. “I think I was really good at it,” Robbie said of he days as a “sandwich artist.” “I, you know, would really spread everything out to the edges evenly — the right amount of everything.”
Whe she finally did get to Hollywood, she had a seemingly fast rise. Her roles included 2013’s “The Wolf of Wall Street”; the sports comedy “I, Tonya” in 2017; and 2019’s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.” Robbie’s performance in “Bombshell” (2019) earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Then there was 2023’s blockbuster film “Barbie,” which surpassed $1 billion in worldwide earnings. It also received eight Oscar nominations including Best Picture, winning Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?”
She co-founded the production company LuckyChap Entertainment, which produced “I, Tonya,” “Promising Young Woman,” and “Barbie.”
Robbie reportedly made around $50 million from “Barbie,” thanks to her dual role as lead actress and producer.
“It kills me,” she confessed. “Like, I actually don’t go [to Subway] that often anymore, because I watch them make it badly — and I’m upset.”
Now 35 and with an estimated net worth of $60 million, Robbie is far from her sandwich days.
“There’s only so much you can do as an actor,” she told Marie Claire Australia. “As a producer, you get to be a part of the conversations about who is being hired and in what roles and how much they’re getting paid.”
