Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s nearly two-decade marriage has come to a halt with the Sept. 30 revelation that the actress has filed for divorce. But that’s not the shocker. The financial details behind their split are drawing as much attention as the separation itself. Central to the headlines is a prenuptial clause that could see Urban walk away with more than $17 million, if he has met its strict conditions.
Is There a ‘Cocaine Clause’?
Before their 2006 wedding, Kidman and Urban reportedly signed an agreement outlining yearly payments of $900,000 to the country star for every year of marriage. Over 19 years, that adds up to a significant sum. The catch? A so-called “Cocaine Clause,” which stipulates that Urban would only be eligible for the payout if he remained sober from drugs and alcohol throughout their marriage.
Urban, 57, has been candid about his past battles with addiction. In fact, months after the couple married, Kidman staged an intervention that led him into rehab. He has publiclly credited this with saving his life and their marriage. The clause appears to have served as both a safeguard for Kidman’s fortune and a reinforcement of Urban’s sobriety journey.
The couple share daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. They have an extensive property portfolio valued at an estimated $282 million, according to the Daily Mail. Kidman has a net worth of about $250 million and Urban’s is estimated to be $75 million. The four-time Grammy-winning country singer, who like Kidman is Australian, has had numerous hits, including “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” “Somebody Like You,” and “You’ll Think of Me.”
Reports suggest that the pair had been living separately since earlier this year, with Urban on the road touring. Kidman had been filming in London, where she rented a mansion for $87,000 a month. And even though the film has wrapped, it appears Kidman is still at the property.
