Before “Avatar” transformed Sam Worthington into a household name, the Australian actor was sleeping in his hatchback with only a mattress for comfort. Fast-forward to today, and the 49-year-old commands a net worth of $60 million, with a real estate portfolio that spans from Hawaiian estates to Los Angeles mansions. The Perth-raised performer had reached a breaking point before his big break. Living in Sydney and increasingly uncomfortable with local recognition, he made the radical decision to sell his possessions and move into his car.

This wasn’t homelessness born of desperation but rather a deliberate escape from a life that felt inauthentic. The unconventional living arrangement lasted until 2009, when James Cameron cast him as Jake Sully, a role originally offered to Matt Damon, in what would become the first film to gross $2 billion worldwide.

Avatar’s success launched Worthington into the financial stratosphere. His first major real estate move came in 2012 when he purchased a sprawling plantation-style estate on Kauai’s island paradise, according to Realtor.com.

The property occupied five acres in the small community of Kealia, featuring three bedrooms with two palatial master suites that opened onto lava-rock gardens equipped with outdoor showers. The home included three bathrooms, cutting-edge security systems, and multiple outdoor entertainment spaces designed for the tropical climate.

After settling down with model wife Lara Worthington, the couple sold the Hawaiian retreat to CrossFit founder Greg Glassman for $6.12 million in 2015, netting a tidy profit.

The Worthingtons upgraded significantly in 2018, acquiring a five-bedroom Los Angeles residence from X-Men producer Simon Kinberg for $10.9 million.

Situated minutes from the Sunset Strip in one of the city’s most coveted neighborhoods, the property came with serious privacy features including gates and strategically planted hedges. High-end amenities included a separate guesthouse containing a screening room, exercise facilities, and sauna. A three-car garage provided direct access to the home, while the cul-de-sac location offered convenient guest parking. After more than a year on the market and several price reductions, they eventually sold for $10.6 million.

Their most dramatic real estate chapter unfolded in Manhattan, where the couple rented a Chelsea loft for approximately $45,400 monthly. What should have been a straightforward tenancy exploded into legal warfare when landlord Eric Steel refused to return their security deposit.

Steel claimed the Worthingtons had damaged a Charles Gwathmey-designed table valued at $175,000, demanding $454,000 in total damages. The couple fired back with their own lawsuit, asserting they left the apartment in near-pristine condition.

The dispute revealed Steel’s pattern of targeting high-profile tenants.

A decade earlier, he had sued media mogul Arianna Huffington over the identical table, claiming similar damages before settling quickly.

The Worthingtons’ legal team argued that any damage amounted to a few thousand dollars at most, noting normal wear and tear plus some water intrusion beyond their control. They had even offered to pay reasonable repair costs. Steel’s estimate included $131,000 just to refinish the table, requiring it to be hoisted through a window and transported to New Jersey. His demands also encompassed $32,000 for floor refinishing, sink refurbishment, and coordination fees, plus $180,000 for lost rent.

The Worthingtons maintained that the landlord never emphasized the table’s supposed fragility during their tenancy. Their attorney, Anne Salisbury, called Steel’s claims demonstrably false and baseless, pointing out that if the piece truly required such delicate care, those requirements should have been explicitly stated in the lease agreement.

Now, according to Variety, the star is eight years sober after battling addiction during his post-Avatar fame. Worthington says he has found equilibrium.

He and Lara divide their time between Australia and the United States with their three sons.
