Oprah Cashes In on Montecito Ranch Sale–Snapped Up by Adam Levine For $17M

California’s celebrity real estate market is crowded with headline-worthy transactions, but few properties carry the long-term cultural and financial significance of Oprah Winfrey’s Montecito compound. That legacy quietly expanded this year when Winfrey sold a Spanish-style residence once associated with her famed Promised Land estate to Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo for $17.27 million.

Winfrey purchased the property in 2019 from actor Jeff Bridges for $6.85 million. Roughly six years later, the sale more than doubled her investment, reflecting both the strength of the Montecito luxury market and her increasingly selective approach to managing an expansive real estate portfolio.

The deal was first reported by Siteline Santa Barbara and later confirmed by Realtor.com, which also identified the Maroon 5 frontman and the Namibian supermodel as the buyers.

The transaction fits within a broader pattern for Winfrey, who has gradually streamlined her California holdings in recent years.

Since acquiring the core of her Montecito estate in 2001 for approximately $50 million and renaming it “The Promised Land,” she steadily acquired neighboring parcels to create one of the most valuable private compounds in the state. More recently, she has sold off adjacent homes while maintaining her primary residence and select surrounding land.

For Levine and Prinsloo, the purchase represents a strategic move within the same high-demand enclave.

According to Architectural Digest, the couple recently sold their own Montecito estate for a reported $60 million and said the decision to relocate was driven by proximity to their children’s school and the rarity of the property itself. Public records indicate they also acquired another nearby home in November for $12.5 million through the same trust, allowing flexibility during redevelopment.

That secondary residence spans roughly 7,300 square feet, with five bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms.

By contrast, the newly acquired Spanish-style ranch is more modest in scale, with a main residence of about 3,500 square feet. Built in 1919 and designed by architect James Osborne Craig, the four-acre property includes guesthouses, a carriage house with additional rooms, equestrian facilities, gardens, an orchard, and a pool and spa. The estate backs directly up to Winfrey’s Promised Land compound, placing the couple among neighbors that include Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The property also carries a measure of Hollywood history. Bridges previously disclosed that he and his wife were evacuated by helicopter during the devastating 2018 Montecito mudslides. Any damage was reportedly addressed before Winfrey acquired the home, though it remains unclear what changes, if any, she made during her ownership.

While trimming her California footprint, Winfrey has continued to expand elsewhere. Over more than two decades, she has reportedly spent upward of $40 million assembling roughly 1,000 acres on Maui, including an 870-acre acquisition completed in 2023. She also owns a 66-acre estate near Telluride, Colorado, along with a separate modern residence in the area.

Despite her estimated $3 billion net worth, Winfrey remains eligible for Social Security benefits, having paid into the system throughout her career. In 2025, the maximum monthly benefit for individuals who delay claiming until age 70 is $5,108. At 71, she would likely qualify for that maximum — an amount that is marginal relative to her wealth but notable as a reminder that the system applies broadly, regardless of income.

For most Americans, the average monthly Social Security benefit — about $1,976 in early 2025 — is a financial necessity. For Winfrey, it is largely symbolic, much like this understated $17.3 million real estate transaction that reflects disciplined portfolio management rather than any need for liquidity.
