Will.i.am credits his success to ditching work-life balance in favor of what he calls a “dream-reality” hustle.

Forget Work-Life Balance
The Black Eyed Peas frontman is both a Grammy-winning musician and a tech entrepreneur, and instead of balancing those roles, he stacks them into a single day.
If managing his tech ventures fills a traditional 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule, will.i.am, whose net worth is estimated to be around $50 million, then devotes his evenings from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. to music and creative work. He described the routine to Fortune while in Rome for the rollout of Raidio.FYI’s AI-powered radios in Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
The artist and tech founder champions a “dream-reality balance,” a mindset focused on grinding toward long-term vision rather than protecting downtime.
That approach comes with sacrifice. Will.i.am says he gives up evenings, weekends, holidays, and even birthdays. He has never celebrated his birthday in the traditional sense, choosing instead to work through it, including flying to China on Boxing Day to pursue manufacturing opportunities.
For will.i.am, he’d much rather miss a birthday than try to find a balance between his tech and music path as he believes “work-life balance is for people working on someone else’s dream,” he told Fortune.
“If you’re trying to build something that doesn’t exist, it’s about dream-reality balance,” he said. “Work-life balance means that you’re working for somebody else’s dream. You just have a job supporting somebody else’s dream, and you want to balance your work and your life.
“But if it’s dream-reality balance, then it’s not work. It’s a dream that you’re trying to put into reality, and you’re ignoring your current reality.”
The dream reality mindset also extends to the recording artist not owning a home despite having the money — he lives out in his rental spaces until he feels it is right to buy a house, will.i.am l told People.
As the founder and CEO of an AI innovation that streamlines apps with messaging, news, calendars, and collaboration tools, he has a studio and office leased to his name rather than owning a mansion, saying that moment has to feel “right.”
Growing up in South Los Angeles housing projects amid food stamps, community violence, and loss, those roots fuel his drive.
