Noem Out: Trump Wants ‘Unstable’ MAGA Multimillionaire Markwayne Mullin for DHS Lead

President Donald Trump has nominated Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin to serve as the next leader of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, replacing Kristi Noem.

Kristi Noem, the ousted Homeland Security chief who enforced President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, did not shy away from the spotlight — or the camera lens. Trump announced the decision on social media, praising Mullin as a strong ally who would prioritize border security and law enforcement. If confirmed by the Senate, Mullin would oversee one of the federal government’s largest agencies, responsible for immigration enforcement, disaster response, cybersecurity, and airport security.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom slammed Mullin as an “erratic, unstable man” after Trump nominated him. On X, Newsom called out Mullin’s high-crime home state, a 2023 incident where he challenged a union leader to a fight, and controversial remarks in Senate hearings, including saying “I don’t want reality” about race. Newsom contrasted Mullin with outgoing Secretary Kristi Noem, calling her “the most shamelessly incompetent and cruel Homeland Security Secretary in U.S. history.”

Mullin is a Republican senator from Oklahoma since 2023 who previously served a decade in the House of Representatives after first being elected in 2012. Known for his close relationship with Trump, Mullin has often defended the administration’s immigration policies and national security priorities.

Before entering politics, Mullin built a large business portfolio that has made him one of the wealthier members of Congress. Financial disclosures indicate the MAGA senator is a multimillionaire, with some estimates placing his net worth at roughly $66 million, according to Inc.

A majority of Mullin’s wealth stems from the family plumbing company he took over after his father became ill. Mullin Plumbing, based in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, became one of the region’s largest service companies under his tenure. The business helped launch a broader network of ventures that now includes real estate holdings, ranching operations, and family-owned investment companies.

Among Mullin’s most notable assets is Mullin Ranch, a 1,600-acre cattle ranch that also operates as a wedding and event venue. It has been estimated the ranch’s value between $1 million and $5 million, though unverified these figures seem low.

The senator also holds ownership stakes in several family-run entities, including investment vehicles and business ventures shared with his wife and children. In addition, his financial filings list at least 30 commercial and residential properties located primarily in Oklahoma, along with investment properties in Washington, D.C., and Florida.

Mullin’s portfolio also includes dozens of investments in corporate securities and mutual funds, as well as a line of credit worth between $5 million and $25 million from global financial services firm BNY.
