Inside the $30M Fabergé Egg: The Ultimate Billionaire Easter Treasure

For most, Easter means chocolate bunnies and candy-filled baskets. But for the ultra-wealthy, the holiday can come with a far more extravagant tradition, owning a rare Fabergé egg worth tens of millions. The famed Winter Egg, sold recently in 2025 for a whopping $30.2 million at Christie’s, making it one of the most expensive Easter-themed objects ever purchased.

Fabergé eggs date back to the Russian Empire between 1885 and 1917, when they were commissioned by Tsar Alexander III and later Tsar Nicholas II as luxurious Easter gifts for members of the royal family. Crafted by master jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé and his workshop in St. Petersburg, each egg was designed as a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Only 50 Imperial Fabergé eggs were ever made, and today, just a handful remain in private hands.

The Winter Egg, created in 1913, resembles a delicate block of ice. Its outer shell is made primarily of rock crystal, intricately carved to mimic frost patterns. The surface is adorned with thousands of tiny diamonds—more than 4,000 in total—set in platinum to create a shimmering snowflake effect. The design is both elegant and innovative, capturing the essence of winter in gemstone form.

But what truly defines a Fabergé egg is the surprise hidden inside. The Winter Egg opens to reveal a platinum basket filled with intricately carved flowers. These blossoms are made from white quartz, with leaves crafted from nephrite jade and delicate gold details completing the design. There are nearly 6,000 gemstones on the egg.

The craftsmanship behind such a piece is staggering. Each Fabergé egg could take nearly a year to complete. The Winter Egg was designed by Alma Pihl, one of the few female designers in Fabergé’s workshop. The design was reportedly inspired by frost forming on a window.

The Winter Egg was originally purchased by Tsar Nicholas II for his mother, it later changed hands multiple times following the Russian Revolution, when many royal treasures were sold off.

Other Fabergé eggs are equally spectacular. The Coronation Egg, for example, contains a miniature replica of an imperial carriage, complete with moving parts.
