When retired New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter purchased Tiedemann Castle in 2003, it was an opportunity to own a piece of his family’s history. Today, as Jeter is still quietly attempting to offload the property, he is realizing the difficulty associated in selling a high-end estate.
Why Did Jeter Decide to Auction?
Just recently, Jeter placed the estate on an auction — a move that is becoming more common among high-end property owners. Jeter, who is worth a reported $200 million, placed the estate on the market for $14.75 million. At the most recent auction in December, the home would not fall for a bid less than $6.5 million and as a result, it is still for sale.
“It’s extremely unique and well above the typical price point in the market in which it’s located,” Misha Haghani, founder of Paramount Realty USA, told Mansion Global. “These types of properties sometimes take more time to sell.”
Today, prospective buyers can still submit bids for Tiedemann Castle, Haghani added.
Tiedemann Castle: A Story of Generation Wealth Building
Tiedemann Castle is located in Greenwood Lake, New York, a village in Orange County that sits on the border of New Jersey and is less than 50 minutes from New York City.
Built in 1903, the home was sold to John and Julia Tiedemann, who adopted Jeter’s maternal grandfather, William “Sonny” Connors. Connors owned the property for many years until his death in 1999. Greenwood Lake Properties LLC, a company associated with Jeter, purchased the estate from the Tiedemann Trust in 2003 for $425,000. The following year, he purchased an adjacent property for $1.2 million.
After extensive renovation, the estate now sits on almost 4 acres of land and stretches across 700 feet of lakefront. Stone walls rising six feet high surround the property as an added security.
The estate features four houses — the main house, guest house, a pool house and a boat house — all equipped with a chef’s kitchen.
Tiedemann Castle’s main house is 9000 square feet. There are six bedrooms, a formal dining room, a family room with a bar, a sunroom, an office and game room. Also on the property are two conference rooms, as well as another six bedrooms spread out between the guesthouse and pool house
On the grounds of Tiedemann Castle are manicured lawns, a lagoon complete with its own stone bridge, a waterfall, and a replica of the Statue of Liberty. There’s also an infinity pool along with an outside kitchen and wood-burning fireplace.
