‘That’s Why They Go Broke’: NBA’s Jaylen Brown Drops Bomb on Sports Industry–Says Players Are Being Robbed by Their Own Agents

Jaylen Brown took an unconventional route when entering the NBA — choosing to forgo hiring an agent despite being the No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 draft, selected by the Boston Celtics.

In episode 320 of “Million Dollaz Worth of Game,” released April 6, Brown sat down with host Wallo to discuss his unique NBA journey and the launch of his new sneaker, Rover.

I Can Do It Myself

Reflecting on his early career decisions, Brown said he didn’t see the need for an agent at the time. With agents typically taking a 4 percent cut, he questioned whether the services offered were worth the cost.

“When I entered the draft, no, I didn’t have an agent. I’m probably the highest pick ever selected that didn’t enter with an agent,” Brown said. “Just when I was evaluated, I went through the whole process and sat with a bunch of people, and what they were offering I didn’t really need.”

Brown also would have been aware that as a shoo-in high draft pick, his salary negotiation would have been simplified because of the rookie salary scale for first-round draft picks, which sets a range of from 80 percent to 120 percent of a predetermined amount a rookie can sign for in a given draft slot.

Brown is one of the league’s highest-paid NBA players of all time, with his current base salary being $49.2 million for the 2024-2025 season, and each year, it will continue to increase close to $65 million in the 2028-2029 season. His total career earnings have been more than $182 million, but he signed a five-year contract for $285.4 million with the Boston Celtics, including $285,393,640 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $57,078,728.

Some of the things that Brown alleged that the agents were trying to offer him were a personal trainer and the promise that he was going to be moved to Los Angeles.

“I leaned on the [NBA players] union,” Brown said.

Usually, a player is dependent upon an agent in an NBA career. The only players of Brown’s caliber to have done the same are Tim Duncan of the Spurs and a few NBA players who managed their contracts like former Celtics player Ray Allen and John Stockton of the Utah Jazz.

All of these players were top prospects who have either won championships or eventually reached the NBA Finals.

An agency is responsible for contract negotiations, endorsements, sponsorships, career planning, legal and financial support, and serves as an advocate for the player for his personal needs.

Brown signed a rookie deal for four years, $21.5 million after coming off a freshman season at University of California, Berkeley where he was the First Team All PAC 12 and PAC-12 Freshman of the Year.
