From dribbling to deal-making, four-time Golden State Warriors champion Andre Iguodala has built his venture capital career on the same principles that shaped his leadership within the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) – thinking beyond basketball and investing in technology, ownership, and community.

In November 2023, he was named acting executive director of the NBPA, crediting the organization with providing athletes financial stability, including retirement benefits. The story of his life off the court recently resurfaced in media outlets.
His firm, Mastry — labeled “Iguodala’s Mosaic” in older articles — is the venture capital outfit he co-founded with partners like his former agent Rudy Cline-Thomas. As of June 2023, Mastry Ventures has invested in eight companies.
They focus on pre-seed to Series B startups in enterprise software, fintech, healthcare, and sports tech, pursuing both strong financial returns and meaningful social impact, particularly increasing diversity and representation among founders.
Mastry made its $200 million inaugural fund in 2023, and it has funded companies like Vessel – a builder of modular multifamily homes, and Athletes First – an NFL talent agency and management firm, according to POC in Tech.
Front Office Sport reported he invested in an athlete wellness app Players Health, and live sports operating system Jump.
Iguodala’s first foray into investing was opening an E-Trade account early in his career, forcing himself to learn the ropes by risking his own cash on stocks and startups.
“I started an E-Trade account. Learn how your money works in different investment gigs. I made some investment in startups with my E-Trade account. You do some research on those companies because you are watching where your money is going and how it’s growing or how it’s being lost. A lot of companies were in this area,” he said, according to Anscape. “From there, you start doing your homework. You say, ‘Make this much money,’ and then you say, ‘Well, what if I got in early? What does it mean if you got in early?’ Then you start learning about Series A, Series B, Series C … ”
The NBPA has been instrumental in protecting players’ rights and ensuring they’re compensated fairly, with Iguodala saying in an official statement, “I am honored to take on this role and serve the players, who are the heart and soul of the NBA.”
“I’m presented with a unique opportunity to take all that I’ve learned as a player over the course of my 19-year career and apply it to creating an even stronger and more influential union for current and future generations of players. I am thrilled to work alongside our extremely committed Executive Committee to lead the brotherhood through its next stage of advancement and development,” he continued.
He’s channeling that gratitude into investments like Jumia Technologies, the pan-African e-commerce giant often dubbed the “Amazon of Africa,” where he serves on the board and helps drive U.S. expansion.
Iguodala’s betting on startups to bridge those gaps, creating access where traditional systems fell short.
