‘I’m No Longer Dependent on Him’: Klutch Sports Boss Rich Paul Thanks LeBron But Says His Billion-Dollar Agency Stands on Its Own

Klutch Sports Group is one of the most influential sports agencies in the NBA, representing elite players and negotiating contracts worth billions of dollars. Founded by Rich Paul, the Los Angeles–based agency specializes in athlete representation, contract negotiations, endorsements, and long-term career strategy.

Paul, who serves as Klutch’s founder and CEO, has often expressed gratitude for the life-changing opportunity he received through LeBron James, while firmly maintaining that the agency’s success is the result of its own business model and track record. During a Jan. 6 appearance on the “Joe and Jada” podcast, hosted by Fat Joe and Jadakiss, Paul discussed how a chance meeting with the Ohio native in 2002 helped launch his career in sports management.

The two first connected at the Akron-Canton Airport, where a teenage James spotted Paul wearing an authentic Warren Moon Houston Oilers throwback jersey and struck up a conversation.

“I don’t think people understand how important it is to be given an opportunity,” Paul said. “So I have to be thankful to LeBron because at the end of the day, I got to this place from a perception where people thought you were extra, and today I’m an executive at the highest level.”

According to Forbes, Paul founded Klutch Sports Group in 2012, and in 2019, he promoted himself to head of sports at United Talent Agency after it made a significant investment in his agency. He also serves on UTA’s board.

Paul, whose agency has negotiated roughly $2 billion in total contract value, states building respect for that initial break comes from building something lasting and self-sufficient.

“So I’m thankful for the opportunity that LeBron gave me,” he continued. “But the ultimate respect for the opportunity he gave me and for him is the position that I stand in now, because I am no longer dependent on him. And that’s the most important thing you can do: become independent from the person who gave you the opportunity, because they didn’t have to give it to you.”

The Klutch Sports chief, with an estimated net worth of $120 million, has grown his firm into a powerhouse representing stars across the league, proving his vision extends far beyond any single client.

As Finurah previously reported, Klutch already has such NBA athletes as LeBron James, Anthony Edwards, De’Aaron Fox, Zach LaVine, Draymond Green and Darius Garland on its roster. Now the brand is expanding with a football division that brings in young NFL stars such as Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith, Chase Young and Bryce Hall.
